NFL Head Coach '09 - Review

If you've ever wanted to go beyond Madden's franchise mode and have more control over your favorite NFL team, then NFL Head Coach 09 is the game for you. Having improved greatly over the last iteration which debuted in 2007, NFL Head Coach 09 is a game...

There are also options to create your own plays and playbooks, though they aren’t anything special. Taking your competitive spirit online isn’t worth your time since it’s basically a chess match where players pick their plays but never watch the plays...

NFL Head Coach 09 Review (Xbox 360)

It takes a certain personality to want to be the decision maker, rather than the one carrying out those decisions; I think the euphemism refers to “Indians and Chiefs.” But seeing as how some activists want to rid the NFL of that “Chiefs” moniker (not...

greatly succeeds in this area. The sheer amount of tasks will undoubtedly be intimidating to pretty much any user (except maybe an actual NFL coach), but the tab-based interface makes nearly any bit of data a click and/or flick away. There’s a learning...

NFL Head Coach 09

All the fun of Madden without the, you know, fun

NFL Draft pressure ; Improved task lists ; Making your boss happy

Hyper-repetitive commentary ; Clunky in-game action ; Boring online mode

Despite being packed with scads of options and details normally suited for spreadsheets and salary cap gurus, it’s hard to justify Head Coach’s full-price treatment. Between the NFL Network announcer that has the same canned sound bite for common...

NFL Head Coach 09

NFL Head Coach 09 delivers a deep and immersive coaching experience, provided you can overlook the outdated gameplay engine and lackluster presentation.

General management tools are deep and realistic ; Menus direct player tasks well ; Teams play like real-life counterparts ; Free-agent bidding and negotiations are innovative and fast

Gameplay uses outdated Madden engine with poor frame rate ; AI trade logic is flawed ; Lack of audibles make no-huddle offenses impossible to stop ; Online play is disappointing

NFL Head Coach 09

You're watching the game with your buddies and during half-time everyone is saying what the coach could've done instead. He could trade this guy and get that other guy, buyout the contract of this one, fire the other…so easy to say but it's not so easy...

An excellent NFL coaching simulator ; Total control of your NFL franchise ; Lots of changes and fixes since NFL Head Coach 06 ; Tremendous replay value ; Easy to surf menus ; Online play

Very complex game ; Sideline action graphics are simplistic ; Pricey if you didn't bought the Madden Collectors Edition

The sound department…well, except the fact that there’s some minimum broadcast commentary from time to time and the same, repetitive soundtrack, there's nothing else to say

NFL Head Coach 09 Review

EA Sports releases a deep, engaging, and utterly addictive coaching simulation. Head Coach isn't perfect by any means, but it's an important step for sports games.

Highly addictive; the draft is great; loads of detail

Some frustrating bugs

(Editor's note. EA Sports has announced plans for a patch via XBL and PSN to fix some of the bugs mentioned in this review as well as many other additions. There is no set timeline for a release of the update. Stay tuned for more details as we get them.

NFL Head Coach 09 Review (Xbox 360)

When it comes to football gamers, the vast majority will look at something like NFL Head Coach 09 (NFLHC) and ask one simple question

Game AI second to none. Game planning is incredible. Unbelieveable depth

Bugs in release form. Interface could use more tweaking. We need defensive audibles

I bet you're trying to find a reason to spend $90+ on a collector's edition of a game that you'll buy again in a year. While the Collector's Edition of Madden NFL Football 09 Doesn't feature everyone's favorite Packer Jet Interception Machine...

I did have a lot of nice things to say about NFL Head Coach 09. Honestly, there are a lot more good things I can say about the game than I already have. I've even been playing this game a whole lot more than I've been playing Madden 09. Going from the...
