Dragon Quest VIII

Traditional RPG gameplay returns in Dragon Quest.

So much is right with this game. Its cheery brightness is deceptive - it looks like a kids cartoon, but plays like a beast. Don’t let anyone mock you about playing a ‘baby game' - let them try and defeat a metal-slime and see what happens. Dragon Quest...

Dragon Quest VIII (PS2) review

Proving there's more to the rpg genre than just final fantasy.rn

Dragon Quest VIII is very much a game versed in the ways of the old-school, serving up little different to what the series has always offered. However, its unique charm stems from this and creates an RPG of the highest order. It genuinely deserves to...

Dragon Quest VIII

If a blast from the past can be this fun, you can keep your flying cars and laser guns.

Classic RPG fun never looked so good ; It scores a solid 9 on the charm-o-meter ; This is a huge, huge adventure

There's no epic drama ; The load times are a tad annoying ; Designed to end your social life

Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama's character and monster art has never looked so good in a game. A new orchestrated score and surprisingly excellent voiceovers have also been added for this American release.

There's nothing revolutionary or evolutionary (or even particularly mold-breaking) about this candy-colored, cel-shaded high-fantasy adventure role-playing game, yet Dragon Quest VIII is one of the best things the PS2 has going for it...

Dragon Quest VIII

Although insanely popular in land of the rising sun, the Dragon Quest series has had a rocky history in the US. Popular in the US during the NES days, the long hiatus between games, as well as the non-release of Dragon Quest V and VI for the SNES,...

There's a lot to love about Dragon Quest. It has a 30+ hour quest, excellent music, fun casino games, the ability to convince monsters to join your party, hidden items and even multiple endings. The fact that the battles aren't a pushover is also a big...

Dragon Quest VIII review

To my extreme disappointment, throughout my video gaming career, I’ve been deprived of all that is Dragon Quest. This is mainly due to the fact that this popular RPG series has made few quests across the Pacific since the NES days. However, I...

Even given these flaws, Dragon Quest VIII is a solid game in every other way. It’s unique from any RPG of its kind, and will constantly surprise you with something new each time you turn it on. It’s a great way to start off the Dragon...

Dragon Quest VIII

Conspicuously absent since 2001, the first RPG series from Japan, Dragon Quest (long called Dragon Warrior on this side of the Pacific), has returned at last. Bigger, bolder, gleaming with all the polish a PlayStation 2 game can muster, Square Enix's...

Of course, all those exploration and sidequesting aspects really take up far more time in general, and for anyone that's started to think they just aren't getting their money's worth out of RPGs lately (I know I have), Dragon Quest VIII does not...

Dragon Quest VIII

In terms of Japanese roleplaying games, there's Final Fantasy and then there's Dragon Quest (also known as Dragon Warrior). Everything else is secondary. When Square and Enix merged, it seemed that the two top RPG properties would have to compete for...

Wonderful polygonal environments; Great capturing of Akira Toriyama's style; Solid old school gameplay; Nice voice acting

Music can be repetitive; Old school turn-based gameplay may turn off some

With all that said, Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is a great modernization of the series. Level-5 has captured Akira Toriyama's style perfectly, making the 2D to 3D leap perfect. Few old school series get such a great modernization like...

Dragon Quest VIII
