Panasonic Lumix GF5 review

As compact system cameras become more plentiful, there are splinter product groups forming. Panasonic's latest compact system camera, the Lumix GF5, is all about being small and easy to use.

Super-fast autofocus, improved image quality, chunky grip, decent array of Micro Four Thirds lenses available

Screen hard to see in bright light, no hotshoe for viewfinder expansion, auto white balance occasionally off, no physical mode dials, we’re not keen on the power zoom lens

This ultra-small compact system camera is no slouch: its super-fast autofocus and decent image quality push the GF-series yet further forward. Aparent feature absences such as a hotshoe or viewfinder can be ignored on account of the higher-spec GX1...

Panasonic Lumix GF5 review

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF5 juggles sophistication with simplicity, updating last year's interchangeable lens GF3. Can it tempt point-and-shoot photographers to invest in a new system?

Compact body ; Physical and virtual controls ; Easiest CSC to use

No viewfinder ; No hotshoe ; Not that different from GF3

Panasonic has largely taken the ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ stance with the 12.1 megapixel GF5. Admittedly, since the brand is reportedly number one in the Compact System Camera (CSC) market, perhaps it was unwise to tinker too much with the GF3’s...

Panasonic Lumix GF5 review

Updated Panasonic has seen great success with its small and beginner-friendly Lumix GF3. So how does its successor, the GF5, shape up?

Small size ; Low noise images ; Metal buttons

No manual control in Creative Control mode ; Slightly unresonsive touchscreen ; Auto white balance inaccuracies

The GF5 is Panasonic's best entry-level G-series compact system camera to date.

Excellent image quality ; Easy to use with touch-screen control ; Good range of on-board digital filters ; More comfortable to hold thanks to addition of finger grip ; High-resolution 3in, 921k-dot LCD monitor

Lack of hotshoe limits flash/accessory options

REVIEW—PANASONIC LUMIX GF5]

This camera with a 12 megapixel sensor is Panasonic's latest entry model in its micro-four thirds interchangeable lens range. It is intended to appeal to customers wanting better image quality from a fully automatic camera. There are very few instantly...

Image quality is consistently good. Auto focus is very fast and even in auto-everything mode the camera works well. The rugged construction makes it feel heavy in comparison to a compact, but it is the reassuring bulk of durability and quality ;...

The absence of an accessible knob to move from automatic into P, A, S or M mode (it is done through the menu) is annoying for anyone who wants to exercise user control. This is definitely a point-and-shoot camera ; VERDICT: We gave the little Panasonic...

We gave the little Panasonic a good work-out at a zoo and were delighted with the results. The LCD was better than average in bright sunlight, although it would be nice to have the option of an optical viewfinder, as Olympus provides for their...

Panasonic Lumix GF5 review

In a competitive field where many manufacturers are focusing the bulk of their research and development budgets, it takes a real gem of a camera to stand out. In scooping our consumer Compact...

Compact size, impressive screen, good touchscreen implementation, general image quality

Lack of viewfinder or accessory compatibility, incremental advances on its predecessor, a few build quality issues

Panasonic Lumix GF5 Review

An all-around excellent four-thirds camera that stands among the top of its class.

Excellent image quality that captures details and true to life colors; Strong sensor; Solid build design that doesn't feel cheap; Interface is efficient and easy to understand; Loaded with features for the casual user; Great quality of lenses

High ISO ranges in low light lead to noise and loss of detail; Lack of viewfinder and hotshoe

Another thing of note here is the 0.09 seconds, which is actually the fastest auto-focus in any camera in the market as per Pansonic’s research which is very impressive.
